How to use this calculator

Pick your Year, Make and Model and we load the official fuel economy for that exact vehicle. Enter the distance of your trip and the price you pay for fuel, toggle round trip if you're coming back, and adjust the city/highway mix to match your route. The result updates instantly with the fuel needed, the total cost, and the cost per kilometre.

To spend less per trip: keep tires at the recommended pressure, remove roof racks and extra weight when not needed, ease off hard acceleration, and combine errands into one trip while the engine is warm. Small changes can move real-world economy by 10% or more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?
Multiply your trip distance by your vehicle's fuel consumption, then by the price of fuel. HandyCarTools does this automatically: choose your car, enter the distance and your local fuel price, and it returns the litres or gallons needed and the total cost.
How much does it cost to drive 100 km?
For a car that uses 8 L/100km at $1.55 per litre, driving 100 km costs about $12.40 (8 litres × $1.55). Select your own vehicle and enter your local price above for an exact figure based on its official rating.
Does the fuel cost calculator work for electric cars?
Yes. For an EV it uses the vehicle’s kWh/100km (or kWh/100mi) rating and your electricity rate in dollars per kWh to estimate the charging cost of a trip, instead of a gasoline price.
Why is my real fuel cost different from the estimate?
Estimates use official EPA and Natural Resources Canada ratings. Real-world economy varies with driving style, speed, weather, traffic, cargo and tire pressure, so your actual cost can be higher or lower.
