How to use this calculator

Fill your tank and note (or reset) your trip meter. At your next fill-up, enter the distance you drove and the amount of fuel you just added. The calculator shows your actual economy and how it compares to the official EPA or Natural Resources Canada rating for your selected vehicle.

For the most accurate reading, always fill to the same point (e.g. first click of the pump) and measure over a few hundred kilometres or miles rather than a single short trip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my gas mileage?
Divide the distance you drove by the fuel you added at the next fill-up. In the US that gives MPG (miles ÷ gallons). In Canada the standard is L/100km (litres ÷ kilometres × 100). Fill up, reset your trip meter, then enter the numbers at your next fill.
Why is my real mileage worse than the EPA or NRCan rating?
Official ratings come from controlled lab tests. Real driving with city traffic, cold starts, short trips, idling, roof racks, low tire pressure and aggressive acceleration all use more fuel, so most drivers see numbers a little worse than the rating.
How can I improve my gas mileage?
Keep tires at the recommended pressure, remove extra weight and roof racks, accelerate gently, maintain steady highway speeds, and keep up with air-filter and spark-plug changes. These can improve real-world economy by 10% or more.
